"We spent eight months trying to find Dad's will. We didn't know if it even existed."
When Robert died unexpectedly at 67, his three adult children were left with a house, several bank accounts, a pension, and no idea where any of the paperwork was. They knew he had made a will — he'd mentioned it in passing years earlier — but nobody knew which solicitor had drawn it up, where the original was kept, or even when it had been signed.
The family contacted over a dozen solicitors in the area. They searched drawers, filing cabinets, and boxes in the loft. Eight months passed before they finally located the will — tucked inside a folder at the back of a wardrobe, completely undated, with a solicitor's name that had since retired and dissolved their practice.
During those eight months, the estate was frozen. The family couldn't access funds, couldn't sell the property, and had to cover costs out of their own pockets. Two siblings stopped speaking due to the stress and disagreements about what Robert would have wanted. His youngest daughter, Claire, reflects:
"Dad was an organised man. He had everything in his head. But none of it was written down anywhere we could find. If he'd just uploaded a scan of the will or even just written 'my will is in the wardrobe, third shelf', it would have changed everything. The grief was hard enough — the chaos made it unbearable."
"You don't need to scan every piece of paper. Just tell your family where to look, who to call, and what exists. That's enough to save them months of heartache."
— Claire, daughter and estate administrator
